This is what we picked tonight from the garden.  We have about 3 gallons of green beans, a dozen or so tomatoes, lots of peppers and cucumbers and of course our eggs.  We were also able to get a few strawberries, blueberries and 4 raspberries!  We have already harvested our potatoes and onions.  We ended up with 250 onions.  We chopped half of them to freeze with some of our peppers and we hung the other half in the basement to use throughout the winter.  We also tried our hand at storing the potatoes in a metal garbage can.  We alternated the potatoes with sand to fill a 40 gallon can.  I hope it lasts all winter and we will start to can the rest of our goodies!

Another New Puppy

Our dog Coco had 13 puppies on May 9th, but one didn't make it.  So, we were left with 12 puppies and decided to keep this one.  We were able to find good homes for all the others, but this blond one was pretty special.  His name is Sugar (to go along with our food names).

And Now Geese

Chris has been wanting to get these little guys for awhile.  I don't know what we are going to do with them, but aren't they the cutest little things.  Devin has named his Fluffy and Lexy named hers Custard.  We thought they may like to go for a swim in our bathroom sink, but they didn't love it as much as we thought.

The Fruit Garden is growing

Our family loves fresh fruits, so we have started our own fruit garden.   Part of our purpose for moving to this mini farm is to grow as much of our own food as possible. Although we know these fruits won't bear fruit for a few years, at least we have started.   We planted 48 strawberry plants, one red raspberry bush, three blueberry bushes, two grape vines, and one black berry bush. In a few years we will have the best pies around!!

Baby Chicks!! and Turkeys??

We just couldn't resist getting a few baby chicks.  We thought this would be a fun adventure to try and the kids will love it!  We purchased a few layers of 5 Reds and 5 Buffs, but also thought we would get 10 cornish hens to try and just for fun we bought 2 turkeys!  We still need to read up on what we need to do with the turkeys, but we have lots of room and who doesn't want a fresh homegrown turkey for Thanksgiving!!

Eggs, Eggs, and more Eggs

Our chickens are much bigger than when first posted and we have added ten more!!  That makes a total of 17 laying hens and one barred rock rooster! We are hoping to have lots of baby chicks this spring, but for now we are selling the eggs.  We have lots of shades of brown eggs and a few green ones too.  We are selling them at our home, dropping off in town of Monticello, or even in during the week in Lafayette.  The eggs are $2.00 a dozen...such a great deal. Just shoot me an email.

Sunset Meadow gets fancy

We picked some of our root vegetables from the garden to create sushi.  Inspired by a few friends to make this at home, we tried it out with all the vegetables coming from our garden.  I also made salmon, tuna, and chicken just for fun.  The kids loved it, especially the wasabi and soy sauce.  I made extra to put in the freezer and have later this winter. YUMMY!
